Denetta Copeland (AKA D3)

Hello, I’m a Spoken Word Artist and cofounder of Between The Lines.

Like so many people in the music and creative industries, the pandemic was a rough time. Although I did have a brief time away from gigging and festivals, it was actually a good time for me to get in the studio, work on my music and launch Between The Lines with my partner Sarah.

My music will never leave me and I’ll be performing long into the future. But Between the Lines is an opportunity to address important issues and work with communities to help them tell their stories.

Denetta enrolled at Lifeforce Productions to learn Music Production and and developed her radio production and presenting skills with Lifeforce Fm and East Leeds Fm, hosting breakfast and local talent shows. She went on to gain media qualifications at BBC Radio Academy.

As a Spoken Word artist by the name of D3, Denetta has always had a pen in her hand and has earned her stripes writing and performing for a wide range of audiences over the past 20 years.

Passionate about passing skills down to younger generations, she began working with the Leeds Young Authors (LYA) when they formed in 2003. LYA, a writing workshop group that produced performance poetry competed as a team of young people in the Brave New Voices poetry slam held in U.S.A every year. Denetta accompanied teams as their coach, travelling with them to San Francisco and L.A.

She became a member of Hayashi, a live Jungle and Drum & Bass band, performing all over the country, which meant leaving LYA. After about 10 years with the band, Denetta wanted to develop her skills in the business of music further so she began a degree in Entertainment Management in 2015.

Denetta has also worked in festival and at live gigs as a steward manager, festival security and admin. She was the production manager of the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude festival in 2016.

During the pandemic, D3 has spent the time preparing her long awaited album, Product of Society. The album tour will take place throughout 2022 and kicked off off with the first single ‘Check Me Out’ in January. She has since released ‘Just Be’ and has a single launch planned for October.
